Sight Distance , Signing , and Safety on Vertical Curves

چکیده

Sight distance obviously affects safety. Although this statement is universally accepted, the relationship between sight distance and safety has not yet been successfully quantified. One reason for this is the obvious strong correlation between sight distance and alignment. Where roads have no vertical or horizontal alignment change, the available stopping sight distance (SSD) is not limited by road elements; such roads have been shown to be the safest. The greater accident experience on roads with horizontal and ventical curvature is not necessarily caused by limited SSD, but high-accident frequency locations quite often have SSD problems. This study began as part of a National Cooperative Highway Research Program project investigating the parameters affecting stopping sight distance.’ This analysis extends the data and scope of that study considerably.

Guidelines for Signing and Marking of Low-volume Rural Roads

Existing standards and guidelines for the application of signs and markings are unsuited and inefficient for use on low-volume rural roads (less than 400 A D T ). T o alleviate this inadequacy, several potentially hazardous situations were evaluated to ascertain actual needs for signs and markings as they relate to economy and safety. These evaluations were based on recent research and on proba...

Road Surface Development and Sight Distance Calculation with New Visualization Methods

The recent advances in computer visualization methods have made it possible to exploit the possibility of applying scientific visualization methods in critical research areas in the field of transportation engineering. In this paper we develop new visualization methods for road design and safety. Typically, roads are designed by combining horizontal and vertical roadway alignments, to allow for...

Vertical and Horizontal Alignment

The writers of this paper see the current highway design standards as a two-dimensional projection which the horizontal and vertical alignments are treated separately. A model developed in this paper considers and study the sight distance as a three-dimensional alignment on the design requirements. The paper examines the required minimum radius of a horizontal curve combined with a crest or sag...

The Effect of Low Friction in Pavement Due to Floods and High-speed Vehicles in Increasing the Number of Rescue Vehicles\' Driving Accidents

Background: The rescue operation is dangerous during floods when the street surface is wet and the rescue vehicles moving fast. Rural roads are known with a high percentage of run-off-the-road crashes and accidents, mostly affected by the unsuitable and inappropriate speed of the car and failure to keep a safe side distance from the highway alignment. Determining the length of the vertical curv...

The influence of visual feedback and register changes on sign language production: A kinematic study with deaf signers.

Speakers monitor their speech output by listening to their own voice. However, signers do not look directly at their hands and cannot see their own face. We investigated the importance of a visual perceptual loop for sign language monitoring by examining whether changes in visual input alter sign production. Deaf signers produced American Sign Language (ASL) signs within a carrier phrase under ...
